Capcom To Publish Sour Patch Kids Game. Yep.

In what can only be described as “you can’t make this stuff up”, Capcom has announced that they will be publishing World Gone Sour, a game that is based on, you guessed it, the Sour Patch Kids line of candy. The game, set to be released this winter, will show the tale of a lost piece of candy that will traverse through various harsh environments in order to reach its ultimate destination – a human stomach.

Sour Patch® is the #1 all sour candy brand in the U.S. but there is so much more to these iconic characters than just their sour exteriors and sweet interiors,” said Sebastian Genesio, Marketing Director for Sour Patch. “Bringing our ‘lost kids’ to life in video game form will add a new dimension to these lovable snacks. We feel this video game will resonate strongly with our core audience of teens and young adults.”

Sour Patch has brought its brand to life in a unique experience that only video games can deliver,” said Christian Svensson, Senior Vice President, Planning & Strategy, Capcom Entertainment, Inc. “Whether you’re a fan of Sour Patch Kids or fun and engaging gameplay, World Gone Sour has something for all gamers to enjoy.”

There’s not much else to say that the wonderfully generic PR speak doesn’t already touch on, other than the odd marketing gimmick that was employed with the use of advertising the game through a Method Man music video. You know, because all the street-smart people out there just LOVE their Sour Patch Kids!

So, what else can be said about this? Honestly, it can go either way; traditionally, marketing tie-ins tend to fail, although there are rare moments when said marketing games are actually legitimately good (Cool Spot), or just so awkwardly creepy that you have no choice but to love it (Sneak King). The question is, will World Gone Sour rack up with those standouts, or just be another cheap and quick marketing tie-in? With Capcom publishing the game, one can hope that the game won’t be complete and utter crap, though this is the same company who did churn out the absolutely horrible Domino’s Pizza tie-in Yo! Noid for the NES back in 1990. This project is so completely random and WTF-worthy that we have no choice but to keep World Gone Sour in our radar.

World Gone Sour is scheduled to be released this winter for Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC, at a price point of 400 Microsoft Points/$4.99, respectively.
