Mom-and-Pop Videogame stores for years have been breaking street dates to compete with videogame stores like GameStop, so I was shocked when my local GameStop called to inform me that my reserve copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was ready to be picked up days before its official release date.

I asked the manager on the phone if there was a change in the games release date and he simply told me that GameStop was releasing the game early for those who preordered the game. I called back and asked if I didn’t reserve a copy of the Game if it was possible to purchase it and the employee told me that the standard copy can be purchased without being reserved.

I went down to GameStop and as I waited at the cash register the Supervisor came out and told the employees to inform anyone who buys a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 that there accounts may be banned if the game is played online before its scheduled release date. When I asked the Supervisor why is GameStop selling a game early if it can ruin my account he told me that “Activision has allowed GameStop to release the game early due to the street date being broken by mom-and-pop stores”. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled to be released on 11/10/09 all over the U.S. but for some states it seems like that isn’t the case anymore. Till it is officially safe to play the game I’ll be playing with my new Night Vision Goggles.
