ufc-undisputed-2010

UPDATE: The trailer has gone live, and again, I'm disappointed. For the one-minute and change of screen time, it is mostly a video resumé for BJ Penn, with a very light emphasis on the gameplay. Plus, BJ stares directly into the camera like a terrorist hostage being forced to renounce his citizenship, and it freaks me out.

If you'd like to see the trailer, it is included below.

Fighting games sure have come a long way since the days of "Mike Tyson's Punch Out". I've never been one for the genre after a bad experience with "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance." (In short, I practiced for hours to learn all the ins and outs of Scorpion's fighting style and was defeated by Flawless Victory when my brother backed me into a corner and kept using the same uppercut. Jerk.) But my opinion changed after playing a demo for "UFC Undisputed 2009." The game, perhaps the first rock-solid mixed martial arts game shocked me with its amazing depth and detailed animation. Sure, I was still button mashing and hoping for a victory on sheer bravado, but UFC Undisputed looked to be a game where technical thought and strategy mattered just as much to victory as how fast you could mash the "A" button.

Now, there's a new UFC game coming out in May. The first trailer for "UFC Undisputed 2010" (for Xbox 360, PS3, and PSP) debuted during the VGA awards and was disappointing, at least to this one critic. Technically beautiful, yes, with its shots of various UFC fighters morphing into each other while you imagined some grips swinging a light back and forth from outside of frame, but the only thing that fight fans and game fans alike could salivate over was a brief shot of Kimbo Slice's digital doppelganger throwing a punch. A new "full" trailer is said to drop Monday at 11:30 AM on IGN, and I can't wait. What exactly "full" means is yet to be discovered, but I'm hoping that the trailer will show up the improved transition animations and more gameplay than live-action shots of the fighters included in the game. I already know what BJ Penn looks like; just show me how to mess up his pretty little face with Brock Lesnar's fist!

We'll have more on the trailer as it becomes available. Stay tuned!
