Ruh Roh! Call of Duty to have a subscription fee soon?
Looks like the Wall Street Journal has recently published a piece on Call of Duty, in which it is stated that Modern Warfare 3 will be introducing Call of Duty Elite, a subscription based service a la Netflix, which may be charging Xbox and PS3 owners somewhere below $7.99 a month. It states that it is an optional subscription, but seeing as the article goes on to state that Activision has made a lot of cash on DLC and the like, it can be expected that Activision will try to capitalize with this subscription service.
My God.
This move by Bobby Kotick leaves me salty. This guy comes up with some of the most annoying ways to make money, and is stripping games of their soul. You can expect this soul sucking service to arrive sometime in November, which is the release for Modern Warfare 3 as well.
God help us all.

My Prediction: Activision will try to push this service hard and there will be enough hardcore "CoD" players that it will survive. But most people who play Call of Duty either offline or online casually (read: teenagers) won't care. The kicker will come if Activision neuters the non-paid online multiplayer component in favor of the paid online multiplayer. If they shirk those customers, then be prepared for a real backlash.
I know for a fact, I won't be down for that. They can s*** it!
I have a bad feeling about this. I'm expecting Maps to be peddled through this. And I play CoD avidly, so I'm going to be very upset when that inevitably happens. This is why business folk need to stay away from games. They have no soul.
