Video Rumor: SEGA Model 2 Arcade Games Receiving Digital Releases?

Virtua Fighter 2 Ad

Now here’s an interesting bit of news: SEGA of Japan’s Youtube channel has recently posted a mysteriously short video, titled [2x5]? ?, which contains an assortment of sound effects.

SEGA fans with keen ears will be able to surmise that the sound effects appear to come from these various Model 2 arcade games which are a part of SEGA’s library:

  • Fighting Vipers
  • Sonic the Fighters
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Virtua Striker
  • Virtual On

What does this all mean, exactly? It could all be just a random video with sound effects that an employee decided to post just to get fans into a frenzy. However, the most logical conclusion would be that this is some kind of tease towards a future announcement regarding these games going digital. It would only make sense, especially since SEGA has recently been in the habit of releasing various back catalog titles for digital release, that these games may eventually release on outlets such as Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network.

This would be rather significant news, as all of these Model 2 arcade games have never seen re-releases outside of their original arcade and subsequent SEGA Saturn ports (with the exception of Sonic the Fighters, which was bundled in the Nintendo Gamecube compilation Sonic Gems Collection and Fighting Vipers  for the PS2 in Japan). Needless to say, it would be amazing fun to see these classic arcade games released for fans of the games as well as for younger generations to experience why SEGA was king of the arcades in the 90s.

Of course, none of this is confirmed at all, and is just speculation on my end, but we can all remain hopeful, right?
