Skrillex Wants YOU for Music Sales
It’s no mystery that Skrillex has been targeting Gamers with his music. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, consider yourself a Cave Dweller. His track “Reptile” which was obviously inspired by the Mortal Kombat series was used in the TV spot for Mortal Kombat 9. His music was also featured by Naughty Dog in the multiplayer gameplay trailer released for “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception”. There’s also his latest involvement with EA in promoting their remake of the FPS title Syndicate. Needless to say, he’s aiming for us.
I can’t help but wonder if the strategy is successful. Of course, UH DUH! He’s Grammy material now so his success isn’t in question. However, was he successful in targeting his preferred audience? Regardless, whether it be gimmick or a genuine love for gaming, the target is set. Porter Robinson, the first artist signed to Skrillex’s label OWSLA, also utilizes video game samples for music creation. In the track titled “The State”, A Super Mario sample is used. It’s brief but definitely impacting. As if presented as an Easter Egg, the sample is heard approximately a minute (4:50 to be exact) before the end of the nearly 6 minute track.
Do yah dig it? CAN you dig it? Have you since swiveled away from the Skrillex craze or are you a drooling fan of his marketing strategy. We’re all ears.
