The Soul Still Burns With The E3 Soul Calibur V Trailer

The legend will never die“, and neither will the Soul Calibur franchise, as Namco Bandai has released a new gameplay trailer for the next installment in the series, Soul Calibur V. Taking place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV, the sequel brings the main players back on the hunt for ultimate power and glory; as such, souls will be broken, and women’s outfits will be scantily clad.

Personally, I feel that the series never surpassed its peak, which was the Dreamcast iteration of Soul Calibur; every sequel since just didn’t have the “soul” (pun intended) that the Dreamcast upgrade brought to the table. The fighting and overall presentation just felt empty compared to the perfection that was seen on SEGA’s incredible white box back in its 1999 launch. I tried to give Soul Calibur IV the benefit of the doubt, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find it that enoyable; the addition of Critical Finishes felt a little cheap and took away from the strategic parry/counter swordplay I was used to. But hey, that’s just me, and I am hopeful that Soul Calibur V will perhaps get me back into the tale of souls and swords, eternally retold.

Soul Calibur V is due to arrive in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3; you can check out the trailer below!
